The Uganda Fund, based in Gulu, Uganda is dedicated to promoting development and post-conflict recovery in the north of the country, where an uncertain peace has taken hold in the absence of The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), a rebel group at war with the government. Since the late 1980s, the LRA has perpetrated massacres and raids and has abducted more than 25,000 Ugandan children for exploitation as soldiers and sex slaves. The fighting between the LRA and the government has left northern Uganda traumatized and chaotic. The Uganda Fund hopes to ease the effects of war on northern Uganda’s people.
Currently, the Uganda Fund runs or supports four programs:
Pader Girls Academy: Located in Pader, a small town northeast of Gulu, the Pader Girls Academy provides education and job training to women in the area, as well as support for victims of HIV/AIDS and those affected by the conflict that plagues the region.
Youth Leadership Project: The Gulu District NGO Forum runs this project with support from the Uganda Fund in order to equip youth for the discussions and projects of development.
Information and Communication Technologies Program: Telecommunications are vital to 21st-century development, and the Uganda Fund shows its commitment by supporting relevant research at Gulu University.
Empowering Hands: This locally based organization is dedicated to reintegrating war-affected youth and empowering them to achieve in education, professions, and creative pursuits through counseling, workshops, and education.
