Youth and adult education is a major issue in Brazil. Although only around 10% of the population are officially reckoned as “illiterate”, a 2005 study by the Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics (IBOPE) found that as many as 68% of all Brazilians over 15 years old are “functionally illiterate”, which means they cannot read or write properly. These figures tend to be even worse in the Northeastern and Northern states, given that Brazil is an extremely unequal country, with huge regional gaps. The negative consequences of facts like these are well known. A less educated worker tends to find serious difficulties to enter and/or stay in the labor market, particularly in our days, thus compromising the future perspectives of income generation for the worker and typically for his/her whole family.
The Telecurso initiative, Brazil’s most comprehensive youth and adult learning acceleration program, is composed of a unique combination of techniques and materials designed to address the very particular reality of adult students. In the Amazon Region, the implementation of Telecurso encompasses the application of content materials especially conceived to meet the needs of working adults who are engaged in the exploration of natural resources. Telecurso’s dynamic methodology and flexible format were conceived to make the most of people’s personal experiences and fit even the most irregular schedule. Considering the targeted audience, these are highly desirable features.
